As a tonal language, Chinese hosts a plethora of homophones. These homophones are a huge part of Chinese culture, finding their way beyond vernacular puns into poetry and art, particularly within symbology in ornamental design.
The Chinese character for Napa Cabbage (白菜) if you seperate the two words 白(bai) is a homophone for the 百 (the word for a hundred) and 菜 is a homophone for 財 (the world for wealth). Napa Cabbages found in painting, as ornament on ceramic vessels, as sculptural objects in homes and businesses is not because of a love of humble, low cost vegetables but a symbolic carrier of the auspicious message of “great wealth.
