The last big American city that still used tokens on transit, Philadelphia officially begun to phase out Septa tokens on April 30, 2018. Artist and friend Leah Mackin of Internet Art Book Fair squirreled a token for me during my last visit to Philadelphia. “I saved a token for you to use, I thought you might like it.” There was no way I was going to use that token for something as ephemeral as a subway ride, and have carried it in my wallet since.
