On September 18, 1967, Karl Marx inscribed a copy of Das Kapital to his friend Johann George Eccarius, a German Tailor and member of the League of the Just,the organization which would evolve into the Communist League. The book was signed just four days after the first edition publication and would remain with the Eccarius family until 2016. This signed, first edition Das Kapital was listed for £120,000 and was sold for £218,500 in an Bonhams’ auction in June 15, 2016.
This artist fascimile of the signature page is printed with photolithographic plates and hand colored with powdered pastels. It was created for the exhibition Marx@200 at Space Gallery in Pittsburgh, PA. Curated by Kathy M. Newman and Susanne Slavick on exhibition from April 6 - June 10, 2018
